The seahorse got its name through Greek mythology, originally known as the hippocampus which was typically depicted as having the upper body of a horse with the lower body of a fish. Both ancient Greeks and Romans believed the seahorse was an attribute of the sea god Neptune or Poseidon and therefore the seahorse was considered a symbol of strength and power.
